A Pre-emptive Step for UK Energy Infrastructure
In a significant news for the UK energy sector, Honeywell has made an announcement of a new partnership with Energy Assets, which is one of the leading multi-utility metering service companies.
The partnership is to support a large-scale upgrade program of gas meters for Energy Assets' portfolio.
It is not a simple replacement, but a clever, innovative solution. Honeywell will supply advanced smart communication modules and batteries for 67,000 installed gas meters, entirely replacing the need for full meter replacement.
Preparation for Seamless Transition
Mobile network operators of the UK have pledged to shut down 2G networks by 2033.
With this deadline drawing near and with the battery life of existing meters nearing the end, Energy Assets has moved preemptively to future-proof its infrastructure.
Honeywell therefore created a customized retrofit solution.
This is done through the new process, which is simplified by just fitting a new NB-IoT communication module and battery, and which significantly minimizes customer disruption and wastage.
The new technology has also been designed to increase meter battery life to an incredible 15 years from an original eight years.
A Partnership Based on Trust and Technology
"Energy Assets has worked very closely with Honeywell on the bespoke modem to future-proof communications with the meter and return expected asset life," said David Sing, group managing director at Energy Assets Metering & Data.
This collaboration extends an established partnership between the two companies dating back to 2014.
The NB-IoT modules are designed to be simply plugged into Energy Assets' existing meters and safely transmit data once a day over the Vodafone network.
This technology seamlessly integrates with Honeywell's meter data management platform to give operators a real-time, centralized view of system performance and data.
Smarter Solutions for a Sustainable Future
Their intelligent digital metering solutions are designed to make it simple to upgrade to future-proofed connectivity while extending the lifecycle of current assets, states Declan Kenny, regional general manager for Smart Energy, Honeywell.
The Honeywell solution is built around strong materials and a modular design, making it an excellent fit for field-installed gas meters.
The project is just one illustration of this broader worldwide trend towards automation.
Hence, this deployment not only assists in ensuring that Energy Assets can continue to provide consistent and accurate data services but also enhances their operational efficiency and customer service delivery.
