Journey to the Moon: Yokogawa and Toyota Partner on the Lunar Cruiser

A Historic Leap in Space Development

In a landmark move marking a new era in space development, Yokogawa Electric Corporation has signed an agreement with Toyota Motor Corporation.
The collaboration focuses on R&D of a manned pressurized rover, nicknamed the "Lunar Cruiser."
Developed jointly by Toyota and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), this innovative vehicle will greatly expand human activity on the lunar surface.
It represents a bold leap forward for Japan's space program.

The Right Partner for a Lunar Mission

The global push to explore the moon has gained momentum, with government agencies and private companies sending missions.
Yokogawa’s decades-long reputation for reliable measurement equipment and control systems made it the ideal partner for Toyota's ambitious initiative.
The agreement covers designing and sourcing prototypes of the rover's control platform and its critical battery measurement units.

A Glimpse into the Future of the Moon

The Lunar Cruiser is a next-generation vehicle in every respect.
It will be Japan's first standalone manned space system and also has the unique capability to operate remotely, unmanned.
This allows for continuous, uninterrupted exploration of the lunar surface.
Yokogawa’s collaboration is a long-term investment, targeting development toward a 2031 or later launch.
Beyond this project, Yokogawa aims to leverage technologies and expertise gained for applications in Earth-bound industries.

Putting Earthly Expertise to Work in Outer Space

Hidehito Shiratsu, head of Yokogawa Electric's Space Business Development Office, shared the company’s excitement:"We are very excited to be collaborating with Toyota on the R&D of this rover."

Space was identified as a target field in Yokogawa’s mid-term business plan, Growth for Sustainability 2028.
The company will apply its extensive control, measurement, and information technology experience—developed in extreme environments on Earth, like polar regions and deep oceans—to the harsh conditions of outer space.
Data from this mission will also enhance the reliability of Yokogawa’s existing product lines.
