Malaysia Speeds Ahead in Energy Transition with AI, Automation and Renewables Leading the Way

A New Era of Strategic Investment in Malaysia's Energy Future

Malaysia has stopped thinking of the energy transition as a regulatory encumbrance—it is now a potent source of competitive advantage. More than 70% of organizations in critical energy sectors are dedicating over 10% of their CAPEX to energy transition initiatives, according to ABB's Asia Pacific Energy Transition Readiness Index 2025. This bold shift reveals a deep belief among business leaders that investing in sustainability today secures resilience and leadership tomorrow.

Digitalization Takes Center Stage

Where investment priorities are concerned, digitalization leads the pack: 42% of Malaysian respondents ranked it as their top focus, against the Asia Pacific average of 38%. In close pursuit are automation at 33% and electrification at 26%. These figures paint an encouraging picture: Malaysian companies are embracing leading-edge technology with zeal to drive efficiency and slash carbon emissions harder than many regional peers.

AI and Automation: The Beating Heart of Decarbonization

Perhaps the most striking finding is the belief Malaysian leadership has in the role of artificial intelligence and automation. Indeed, 71% of the respondents believe AI and automation are absolutely instrumental in making the energy transition successful. By leveraging AI-enabled analytics, predictive maintenance, and smart grid optimization, organizations are realizing unparalleled energy efficiency and operational excellence. Consequently, Malaysia is well-placed to be at the forefront of the intelligent, low-carbon energy systems of tomorrow.

Solar Leads, But a Diversified Renewable Portfolio is Rising

The future is bright, quite literally. An astonishing 70% of the surveyed organizations have already adopted solar energy, making it the undisputed leader in Malaysia's renewable journey. However, the vision goes far beyond just solar. Over the next five years, 78% of the companies foresee a more-than-20% increase in renewable energy consumption. Hydropower at 54%, green hydrogen at 45%, and wind at 44% are picking up serious momentum, in line with the NETR target of 70% renewable energy by 2050.

Cybersecurity: Unsung Hero of Digital Transition

While exciting, the technology leap is not being taken lightly by leaders; the greater connectivity comes with greater responsibility. A very encouraging sign that Malaysia understands trust and resiliency are built upon a secure digital foundation is that 93% of organizations report feeling well-prepared for cybersecurity threats.

Collaboration is the Key to Full Potential

There is, however, reason for optimism. Challenges remain, and thus collaboration has been one of the leading themes. A quarter of respondents identified public-private partnerships as a key unexploited opportunity. Furthermore, 63% want to see better incentives from government, while 61% put greater cross-regional grid cooperation at the top of the agenda. More than half want private sector investment increased. These findings reflect the following: Malaysia's energy transition will be faster when the government, industry, and technology providers collaborate closely.

A Bright and Resilient Future Ahead

The energy sector of Malaysia is not just keeping pace but leading with purpose, innovation, and determination. Powered by AI, automation, digitalization, and a bold renewable agenda, the country is setting up a clean, smart, and resilient energy system. As Abhinav Harikumar, Vice President of ABB Energy Industries Southeast Asia, aptly puts it, these technologies are not merely innovative but are essential levers for a sustainable tomorrow.
