A Historic Contract for Berlin’s Mobility
S-Bahn Berlin, Siemens Mobility, and Stadler Deutschland have received the official award notice for the Berlin S-Bahn tender, making the contract legally binding. This partnership combines expertise in operations, vehicle manufacturing, and maintenance to deliver a modern, high-performance rail system for Berlin and Brandenburg. The agreement includes the supply of 350 four-car, fully walk-through trains, 30 years of maintenance, and 15 years of operations on the North–South and Stadtbahn sub-networks.

The trains ordered build upon the successful series already operating on Berlin’s Ring network, which have achieved over 120 million kilometers with high reliability. For the new tender, Siemens and Stadler refined the design with a modern driver’s cab, updated fire protection, and advanced cybersecurity. The traction system has been optimized for energy efficiency, setting new benchmarks while maintaining the distinctive design familiar to Berlin passengers.
Passenger Comfort at the Forefront
The new trains prioritize accessibility and comfort. Stadler’s bright interior design offers flexibility for diverse passenger needs, including a redesigned multi-purpose area with wheelchair space, height-adjustable seating, and companion options for reduced mobility. A new eco-friendly air-conditioning system ensures comfortable temperatures even in extreme heat, while USB‑C charging ports at every second seat enhance convenience for passengers.
Predictive Maintenance for Reliability
Siemens Mobility’s Railigent X platform will manage maintenance digitally over the 30-year contract. By connecting vehicles, infrastructure, and IT systems, Railigent enables predictive maintenance through real-time monitoring and data analysis. This approach detects potential disruptions early, increases reliability, and improves fleet availability. Maintenance processes—from materials management to workforce planning—will be digitally optimized, reducing costs and boosting efficiency. Cybersecurity services, including software updates and vulnerability monitoring, will further ensure secure and resilient operations.
