ABB Bolsters Grid Automation Portfolio with Strategic Acquisition of Netcontrol

An Action Plan for Smarter Grids

In a highly encouraging move in the energy space, ABB announced that it has signed an agreement for acquiring Finland-based company Netcontrol, a firm known for its expertise in electrical grid automation solutions. This particular move takes place at a time when the global power grid is under severe stress due to growing challenges in terms of fast-tracked electrification, increased renewable resources, and erratic climatic conditions. Further, it has been estimated that electricity demand will constitute 50% of the overall demand by 2050 by the IEA.

Managing the Difficulties Present in Contemporary Power Systems

As the energy shift gathers steam, the grid is increasingly facing the challenge of becoming the bottleneck. Increasing demand from population growth, industry, electric vehicles, and heat pumps, together with intermittent renewables, makes differentiated connectivity a tough call. But the hope is digital transformation and automation. ABB's robust portfolio in electrification and Netcontrol's solutions can enable them to deliver better stability, reliability, and flexibility to the energy stakeholders. Therefore, ABB is poised to enable clients to overcome the obstacles with confidence with the acquisition of Netcontrol.

Inspirational Leadership: Excitement and Vision

As if to exemplify, Adrian Guggisberg, Division President of ABB Distribution Solutions, explained it thus: “The electricity grid is becoming the limiting factor of the energy transformation. The purchase of Netcontrol is an excellent fit in relation to our growth ambition in grid automation and an important step further to help our customers stay ahead of the race.”

Moreover, Sami Kurunsaari, CEO of Netcontrol, truly looked forward to this new phase with actual enthusiasm: "Joining ABB is a very exciting next chapter for our company," he exclaimed. He emphasized that this collaboration would enable their trusted and secured solutions to reach a broader global scale with continued collaboration with their customers.

Future Consideration for Smooth Integration

Netcontrol, founded in 1991 with a staff of 100 highly skilled individuals, brings a tremendous amount of experience to the table. Thus, with the closing in Q1 2026, subject to approvals, Netcontrol's offerings will be included within ABB's Distribution Solutions business, expanding even further through ABB's wide-reaching channels across the globe. This acquisition will not only be beneficial to ABB, but it will further increase the advancement towards a smart and sustainable power grid.
