Siemens Officially Opens Advanced Rail Manufacturing Facility in Lexington, North Carolina

A Significant Achievement in the History of American Rail Manufacturing

The opening ceremony of Siemens Mobility’s state-of-the-art manufacturing and rail services facility took place in Lexington, North Carolina, on April 7, 2026. Being fully operational, this newly constructed manufacturing facility is a huge breakthrough for passenger rail manufacturing in the United States. What is more, the very first coaches manufactured in America will be delivered in summer 2026.

An Investment for the Future of Railways

The recent establishment of a plant that cost 220 million dollars is the most recent addition to the manufacturing plants of Siemens Mobility in the U.S. This newly developed manufacturing site is set to be an essential aspect in satisfying the increasing demand for railways in the country. Announced for the first time back in March 2023, the plant consists of ten buildings occupying 200 acres of land. Moreover, it promises job creation, having employed over 375 people by 2028.

Advanced Manufacturing and Complete Rail Services

The Lexington plant is designed to manufacture Siemens Venture passenger coaches, which are considered one of the most technologically advanced and innovative passenger coaches in the North American region. Additionally, the plant will also act as Siemens’ center of rail services on the East Coast and will offer repair services for bogies, locomotives, and coaches, with a possibility of expanding in the future to offer services for light rail vehicles.

Technological Innovation to Boost Productivity

The project has been conceptualized to incorporate the latest technological advancements, which include artificial intelligence, robotics, big data analysis, and augmented reality. Thus, these features will result in efficient processes, better decision-making capabilities, and setting up a worldwide standard for automated manufacturing. Moreover, there is a rail link that connects the factory to the main line for shipping finished products to clients on the East Coast.

Good Support from Amtrak and the Local Community

President Roger Harris of Amtrak stated that the “Amtrak trainsets to be produced at the Siemens Lexington facility are going to play an important part in ushering in a new era of rail travel, and this will begin with the production of our new Airo series that will be made at this facility for the first time.” The Siemens facility is located in Davidson County, in the center of the Piedmont Triad region.

A Significant Contribution to the US Economy

Partially funded through a Job Development Investment Grant provided by the State of North Carolina, this project will contribute significantly to the state’s economy in the coming 12 years, with an estimated contribution of 1.6 billion dollars to the state’s economy. In addition, this plant further demonstrates the commitment of Siemens to American industry. Siemens has a workforce of around 45,000 employees in the US and deals with about 12,000 suppliers.
