A Step Towards Maritime Decarbonization
In an exciting and visionary shipping initiative, ABB has joined hands with Swedish nuclear power company Blykalla.
The two industry leaders have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate the deployment of small modular lead-cooled reactors, specifically designed for ship application.
Not just a new deal; it's an expansion of an old alliance, an extension on an MoU entered into in October 2024 under the umbrella of clean energy for Sweden.
The alliance actually symbolizes the growing momentum and vital imperative of nuclear energy as a viable source of energy for ships.
Blykalla's Revolutionary Reactor: The SEALER
At the heart of this groundbreaking partnership is Blykalla's innovative Swedish Advanced Lead Reactor (SEALER).
This is not your run-of-the-mill nuclear technology; it's an extremely small and passively safe reactor, with passive safety inherent to it so that the need for any operator intervention is completely done away with.
In fact, the SEALER was one of only three reactors chosen in the Nuclear Propulsion for Merchant Ships I (NuProShip I) project, a high-profile effort to utilize Generation IV SMRs to meet the very stringent demands of seagoing ships, most notably large ones.
This groundbreaking design truly sets the stage for a new era of clean and safe marine propulsion.

ABB's Critical Integration Role
For this ambitious vision to become a reality, ABB's extensive experience will be absolutely crucial.
With its extensive background of system integration experience and cutting-edge power distribution, control, and automation technologies, ABB will play a key role in the efficient and successful execution of the SMR as a shipboard application.
Their technical prowess will be vital in translating Blykalla's reactor design into a working and reliable power source for the harsh marine environment.
Shared Vision for a Cleaner Ocean
Both companies are clearly interested in the potential of this partnership.
Blykalla CEO Jacob Stedman was enthusiastic, observing that their compact reactor design offers a "unique opportunity to lead the way in maritime nuclear propulsion."
He added that only achievable through an "ecosystem of committed partners," this collaboration is therefore a "critical building block."
Following this observation, ABB Marine & Ports President Juha Koskela referred to the "strong potential" of SMRs in driving decarbonization.
He welcomed their partnership with Blykalla as an "important step along shipping's decarbonization journey," enabling innovative ship design that will reduce emissions substantially relative to existing carbon-based fuels.
This vision of a cleaner, greener shipping industry is truly delightful.
