Baker Hughes' Long-Term Cooperation with BP
In a significant step forward for their long-term cooperation, U.S. energy technology leader Baker Hughes has secured an enormous 90-month service contract from UK energy player BP. The new contract is focused on the BP-operated Tangguh LNG project in Indonesia's Papua Barat province and demonstrates the long-term trust between the two companies. Through providing critical support to the facility's turbomachinery, Baker Hughes will play a critical role in ensuring the reliable operation of the plant and Indonesia's energy future.
A Cornerstone of Indonesia's Energy Future
The new deal won is much more than a simple contract; it's evidence of the long-standing partnership between BP and Baker Hughes, which has thrived since 2009. The service agreement covers essential spare parts, immediate repair services, and sole field service engineering assistance for major turbomachinery, including heavy-duty gas turbines, steam turbines, and compressors. This wide-ranging support is central to maintaining the operational integrity of the plant's three LNG trains. In the course of this broader effort, Baker Hughes was also recently contracted to supply power and compression systems for BP's Tangguh UCC project, which started construction in November 2024.
Unlocking Critical Gas Resources
The project can be a game-changer for Indonesia, as it will open up approximately 3 trillion cubic feet (tcf), or 84.9 billion cubic meters (cbm), of additional gas reserves. This will extend the gas supply to BP's existing LNG terminal up to the planned start of the Ubadari gas field in 2028. To make sure that the project is locally content-compliant, Baker Hughes is proudly working with PT Imeco Inter Sarana, a strong local consortium partner. This requirement of local partnership reflects the project's commitment towards development of the region.
A Commitment to Sustained Performance
Tiffany Pitts, the Vice President of Gas Technology Services for Baker Hughes, emphasized the company's focus on the region. "This long-term Tangguh LNG service agreement with bp is a testament to our enduring partnership and commitment to the development of energy in Indonesia," she noted. "The high-tech skills and capabilities of our people will help to ensure the optimal operation of the Tangguh facility, which is so vital to meet the energy demands of the region." Actually, the Tangguh LNG facility is the cornerstone of Indonesia's energy strategy, and Baker Hughes' upkeep of its vital turbomachinery is essential to offering a stable and secure energy supply to the entire Asia-Pacific region.
